I really struggled on a name for this piece but then it all hit me at once. This piece kind of makes me think of Eric's struggle to Redeem himself, he punishes himself through the entire graphic novel because he partially blames himself for what Happened to Shelly, and I think the self mutilation was only a part of his punishment. Eric was a very kind person before the incident and I think that killing those people was a kind of punishment in itself, to redeem himself for Shelly. That may not actually be what actually what James was trying to portay, but that's what I took away from it, and I put that into this.

I must apologize though the quality isn't spectacular on this, I'll try to get some better images of it soon, right now this is the best I have, but it does look better than this on the paper.

Though I can't put this up without telling what inspired this piece.

Shadows and Light by *PZB

I was surfing around and bumped into this awesomely done piece done in charcoal, I even commented on how I needed to do more charcoal. So Not only did that piece inspire me to work in charcoal, but I used the over-all pose as well. Obviously, completely different when it comes to detail, but the basic pose is the same, slumped and looking over and down.

Thanks for the inspiration *PZB.

Edit: I decided to put up two other versions of this in my scraps.

Half finished version

Nice, you'll have to show me the drawing on paper next time I'm at your house.

This is a wonderful rendering! Have you ever tried using white charcoal with the toned paper? I think it would help greatly bump the contrast....just hitting some of the apexes (like his shoulders, for example) would really make this pop.

Well it's good to see you found a way to work around the blotch of black that almost messed you up. You do well with charcoal hon. And I agree with PZB, tonned paper and some white charcoal is indeed be something you should try out. I'm really digging the tones you managed to pull off in this... nice detail on the muscles.

Now you can attest to the fact that it looks much better on paper than in this picture.

I think I have a white charcoal laying around somewhere but I wanted to just go with the straight up charcoal. I'm not familiar with charcoal and this drawing is actually the first time I ever used a tortillion so I didn't want to throw another new thing in there for me. I'll probably tinker with that next time though.

Thanks, I tried to put as much detail into this as I could seeing as you can get quite detailed with the charcoal, personally I like the veins in the arms. I'll have to do another charcoal sometime soon and see what I can do with the white.

Ahh, I typically use just my fingers when doing charcoal. ANything of high detail, I can get with the charcoal pencils. Heh....but that's me....I usually make a mess of myself. :D

I've done a few where I've used my fingers but the tortillion really workso much better with significantly less mess, and a lot finer details, like I got on his hands. I've made a mess out of myself with those before though, big time. I suggest you give the tortillions a shot, they're nice.

I use them for pencils, but I'm in such a habit (with all my pastel work that I've done between Disneyland portraits and Trader Joe's now) using my hands that I don't know that I could switch over for pastels and charcoals. :D
